Catalinbread SideArm is a classic overdrive pedal with a fresh take on the classic green overdrive as they were made in 1979.

There’s nothing like kicking on “ol’ reliable” and watching the faces in the crowd light up as you nail your finest riff. The Sidearm is that device. The Sidearm lets you tailor your drive sound to accompany the rest of your rig, rather than the other way around.

The typical “green” overdrive features a combination of filters at different stages to give its characteristic sound. These have all been carefully adjusted to get a little more out of the circuit, accentuating the new Mids control and the overhauled Tone knob.

The Sidearm’s “hump frequency” sits at 1KHz, but the mids control sits at the typical “green” frequency of 720Hz, letting you boost or cut this band at will for a more customizable tone. The Tone control boosts lows and cuts highs when turned down, and has the opposite effect when cranked. This control sits centered at 1KHz, the same as the hump, letting you fine-tune the entire frequency response and giving you back some lost treble, or thickening up the tone if you’re plugged into your amp’s bright channel.

The pedal is powered by a standard 9 volts power supply (sold separately).

Back before most people heard the term “boutique” in reference to music gear, something was brewing in all corners of the globe, spurred by the Internet and the ability to share information freely. Guitar players began to look backwards to move forwards, combining time-tested approaches to pedalcraft with forward-thinking ideas. The Pacific Northwest’s answer to this boom was Catalinbread, born in 2003 on Nic Harris’s kitchen table. After producing the Super Chili Picoso, the first Catalinbread-branded pedal exclusively for ToneFactor, a Seattle-based guitar shop.

Adventurous designs

The sales of this fur-lined pedal went on to fund some more adventurous designs, and before long Catalinbread had outgrown both its business model and modest shop space, packing up the truck and ending up in Portland, Oregon. We’ve been here since 2006, now manufacturing over 30 unique pedals, built by human hands, one by one.
